One of the finest and most well-known posters of The Diggers, San Francisco’s radical anarchist performance troupe, who drew influence in their nonconformist militancy from the 17th century Agrarian socialist organization of the same name. The Diggers combined radical community action—such as their well-known free store and daily free food in golden gate park—with street theater, happenings, and pranks. In the 1966 event, The Death of Money, for example, fake money was carried in a coffin down Haight St. by masked, singing hippies. Stanley Mouse, who designed this broadside, was well-known for his posters for bands like The Grateful Dead.
